TheGrio’s homepage and article templates hadn’t evolved in over a decade, making the experience feel outdated and rigid. With most traffic landing on article pages via mobile, we were failing to meet modern usability standards. Videos were overlooked as users scrolled, cutting into critical ad revenue. Social sharing and content discovery were also poorly integrated, limiting engagement.

my approach

I led a complete mobile-first redesign of both the homepage and article layouts with a focus on UX performance and monetization. We introduced sticky, in-view video players to increase visibility and ad retention. Social tools and related content modules were embedded natively to keep users engaged longer. I worked hand-in-hand with developers to translate modern UX patterns into scalable, responsive systems.

The relaunch boosted engagement by 20%, with users spending more time on both mobile and desktop. Video impressions—and the associated ad revenue—saw a notable lift post-implementation. The new experience encouraged deeper content interaction and improved discoverability. Our design now supports a more dynamic, user-centered editorial flow.
